Level 2 Application

Early Childhood, Level 2 applicants must complete Early Childhood, Level 1 prior to applying to take Early Childhood, Level 2. When desiring to complete Early Childhood Level 2, applicants must register for the PDLC and send the following directly to the PDLC site manager when registering. The GIML EC PDLC faculty will review the application materials and contact the applicant regarding acceptance into the Early Childhood, Level 2 PDLC. Materials are due by May 1, 2024.

Early Childhood, Level 2 Required Application Materials

1. Link to an unlisted 15-minute video-recording of the applicant teaching children between the ages of birth through five in stages 1-5 of preparatory audiation is required. These will be reviewed with regard to the applicant’s music engagement leadership. The video-recording should include the following:

  • Songs in Mixolydian and Dorian tonalities
  • Rhythm Chants
  • Unusual paired and unpaired meters
  • Movement with flow
  • Singing and chanting with appropriate pattern instruction

2. A one-page reflective statement about the candidate’s development as a practitioner using Music Learning Theory with young children.

Piano 2 Application Requirements:

To apply for a Level 2 PDLC, Level 1 must have been completed in a previous year.  Levels 1 and 2 are not completed during the same year as time is required to put the learning from Level 1 into practice.  Participation in Level 2 requires official acceptance through the application process outlined by the Gordon Institute for Music Learning below. 
Level 2 video requirement deadline is May 15th. Please send recording links and questions to Jenny Fisher (jfishe19@emich.edu).
Entrance requirements:
• A 15-20 minute video of the candidate teaching piano students.  Either 15-20 continuous minutes or a compilation of video clips are acceptable.  The video is reviewed in light of the quality of the teaching rather than the success of the student(s) on the recording.  Include the following:
1. Teach piano students two minutes of Tonal Learning Sequence activities at the Verbal Association level in harmonic minor tonality.  Include teaching mode and evaluation mode.
2. Teach piano students two minutes of Rhythm Learning Sequence activities at the Verbal Association level in triple meter.  Include teaching mode and evaluation mode.
3. Perform songs in at least two different tonalities.
4. Perform songs or chants in at least two different meters.
5. Move in continuous flow and demonstrate weight, space, and/or time activities with piano students.
6. Teach a ‘Song to Sing’ from Music Moves Book 1 or 2.
7. Teach a piano piece from Music Moves Book 1, Book 2 or a rote piano solo.
8. Guide a Rhythm Creativity/Improvisation activity using voice and/or piano.

• A one-page single-spaced reflective statement on the candidate’s experiences teaching Learning Sequence Activities (Tonal Units 1-3 and Rhythm Units 1-4) and on his/her development as a general practitioner of Music Learning Theory.
