Chapter Spotlight: New York GIML
Ashley Moss Fox, NY GIML President
Ashley has been involved with the NY-GIML Chapter since 2009 and is the current chapter president. As president, Ashley leads the rest of the chapter, helps coordinate professional learning, supports PDLCs, and encourages membership. She also works to forward the spread of MLT in New York by acting as a liaison to other state professional organizations and by building connections with colleagues.
As mentioned above, one goal of the NY-GIML Chapter has been to forward the spread of MLT in New York. Ashley and other members of the board and general membership have been working to do this by connecting with other state professional organizations such as NYSSMA, New York State’s School Music Association. As more GIML members have taken on NYSSMA leadership roles, MLT has had more representation throughout New York State. At recent NYSSMA conferences, sessions with GIML presenters have extremely high attendance, and many attendees usually leave MLT sessions interested in learning more about MLT and GIML.
Along with working towards higher MLT visibility in NY, another goal of the NY-GIML Chapter has been longitudinal planning. The NY-GIML Chapter has all of its workshops planned through 2025, allowing for more efficient advertising and more accessibility to members who are interested in attending workshops.
One challenge NY-GIML has been working through is that the membership base is very spread out, making it hard to serve all members. To combat this, the chapter typically offers hybrid workshops with options to attend in-person or virtually.
Overall, Ashley is very proud of the growth and movement that the NY-GIML chapter has made. In reflecting on the past few years, she recognizes how important collaboration with other organizations has been for the chapter. She encourages other GIML chapters to collaborate with professional organizations in their area to help make colleague connections and build MLT visibility.
